Say hello.
If you haven’t met, introduce yourself when you next see a neighbour. There’s no need for a long conversation.

28 September 2026 · UK Good Neighbour Day
You don’t have to know your neighbours already.
Say hello, introduce yourself, or invite someone for a short walk or a cuppa. A quick chat counts too.
Free to take part. No account. Just neighbours.
01 / When to take part
Choose a day that suits you.
UK Good Neighbour Day is on 28 September each year. It starts Good Neighbour Week, running through 4 October, so you can choose a day that suits your street, building or diary.
Wherever you live in the UK, you’re invited. You don’t need a big event or a committee. You can start with one neighbour.
02 / Why September?
A reason to say hello after summer.
September is a chance to reconnect with neighbours, welcome someone new, or stop for a first chat.
In April 2025, 53% of adults in Great Britain said they felt they belonged to their neighbourhood. ONS, adults aged 16 and over, Great Britain (opens in a new tab).
03 / Ideas for taking part
If you haven’t met, introduce yourself when you next see a neighbour. There’s no need for a long conversation.
Start with: “Hi, I’m [name] — I live nearby. I thought I’d say hello.”
Invite a neighbour or two for a short walk. Suggest a time and say roughly how long you’ll be out.
Start with: “I’m going for a quick walk on Sunday. Would you like to join me?”
Suggest a coffee at a local café or a cuppa in a shared space. You don’t need to invite anyone into your home.
Start with: “Would you fancy meeting for a coffee sometime?”
Make it easy to join. Explain what to expect, ask what people need, and respect a “no, thanks”. You could also offer help: “Would you like a hand with that?” Ask first.
04 / The neighbour pack
Print an invitation to share.
The free neighbour pack has a ready-to-fill invitation, a poster for your noticeboard and tips for arranging a small get-together.

More ways to come together
There are already thoughtful ways to bring people together. Here are three other campaigns to explore alongside a September hello.
A June invitation to bring neighbours together over food.
A June celebration of what we have in common, inspired by Jo Cox.
A June week of community activity from the Neighbourhood Watch network in England and Wales.
A few good questions
No. Choose any day from 28 September–4 October. And keep saying hello afterwards.
Taking part in the campaign and using the neighbour pack are free. Choose something that works for everyone’s budget, like a walk or a chat in a shared space.
No account or campaign registration is needed. You can take part by saying hello to a neighbour. If you use a shared venue, check with whoever looks after it first.
Inspired by the US tradition of Good Neighbor Day (opens in a new tab), held on 28 September.
